Uzbekistan in the news (sort of)

I’m sure some people are searching for information on the Uzbek/Kyrgyz riots and stumbled upon this blog. Sorry. I just want to clarify: I grew up in Uzbekistan but am not an ethnic Uzbek myself, haven’t been back in more than 20 years, and never even visited Kirghizia (as Kyrgyzstan was called when I was a little girl). But these riots are happening in towns like Osh and Jalalabad which are less than ten miles from the Kyrgyz/Uzbek border and only about 120 miles from Tashkent itself. Thousands of refugees have already crossed the border into Uzbekistan, which means that my former hometown will soon be the focus of a major refugee crisis or at least be in the middle of managing this crisis from an uncomfortably close distance. I can only hope that things work out well.
